  • What position would I like to have in the coming months or years?
  • Which skills are worth developing to grow professionally?
  • Would it be better to work closer to home to save time in traffic?
  • What kind of colleagues and team environment do I want to surround myself with?
  • Why not try something new to advance my career?

To explore these questions and evaluate career paths from different perspectives, we use Dilts’ Neurological Levels Pyramid. This approach helps identify the current state, the desired future state, and the gap between them. At Yoter Up, we apply this method both for team coaching within Agile practices and for self-assessment. We recommend allocating 40–60 minutes to get meaningful results from this exercise.

Step 1: Analyze Your Current Professional Situation

1. Environment – Where and With Whom?

  • What is your current work environment like: team, office, tools, and surroundings?
  • Who do you interact with most frequently? Who do you report to, and who reports to you?
  • What are the key benefits and limitations of your current work environment?

Documenting your answers is crucial, as they will be used later in the exercise.

2. Behavior – What and How Do You Act?

  • How do you typically behave in your work environment?
  • What actions do you perform daily?
  • What do you think, say, and hear throughout your workday?
  • How do the actions of your colleagues affect you, and how do your actions impact others?

3. Skills and Competence – How Do You Achieve Results?

  • What skills and competencies do you rely on in your role?
  • How do you apply these abilities to accomplish your tasks effectively?

4. Beliefs and Values – Why Do You Do What You Do?

  • Why do you engage in certain activities?
  • Why do you believe in specific approaches or methods?
  • Why do you enjoy or dislike your current responsibilities?

5. Identity – Who Are You Professionally?

  • What kind of professional aligns with your current environment, behavior, and skills?
  • Are you a specialist, a mentor, a team lead, or an innovator?

6. Mission – What Drives You?

  • What is your professional mission, the purpose bigger than yourself?
  • What inspires you and gives meaning to your daily work?

By the end of this first session, you will have a clear picture of your current career state.

Step 2: Define Your Desired Career State

During the second session, reverse the process: start from the mission and move down toward environment, asking the same questions for your desired future state. This top-down approach clarifies what changes are needed to achieve your goals.

Step 3: Summarize and Plan Your Career Development Path

We recommend filling in a matrix that includes:

  • Environment: Current vs. desired work surroundings and team interactions.
  • Behavior: Current actions vs. actions needed to reach your goals.
  • Competence: Skills you have vs. skills you need to develop.
  • Beliefs & Values: Motivators and guiding principles.
  • Identity & Mission: Who you are now and who you want to become.

By comparing both sets of answers, you can identify concrete steps to bridge the gap and progress toward your ideal professional state.
